Fulham vs Liverpool predictions

And then there was one.

After Liverpool won the EFL Cup with a 1-0 victory over Chelsea in February, there was talk of a possible quadruple in Jurgen Klopp’s final season at the helm.

But in the last month or so, Liverpool have suffered premature exits from the FA Cup and the Europa League, leaving the Premier League title as the only other trophy they can still win this term.

Ending the Klopp era with just the EFL Cup would feel like a damp squib. True, few expected Liverpool to even be in the title race this season. But it is hard to shake the feeling that they have shot themselves in the foot twice of late.

First, their utter domination of Manchester United at Old Trafford only yielded a 2-2 draw. Liverpool were incredibly wasteful in front of goal, allowing their arch-rivals to escape with a point.

The following week, profligacy in and around the penalty area again played a decisive part as Klopp's side suffered a shock 1-0 home defeat by Crystal Palace.

A return of one point from a possible six in those two matches has handed the initiative to Manchester City and bumped Liverpool down to third in the table.

Even so, there is no need for pessimistic fatalism. The Reds would end the weekend in top spot if they beat Fulham and Arsenal drop points against Wolverhampton Wanderers (City are in FA Cup action against Chelsea).

A two-point deficit as things stand is hardly insurmountable. City have the easiest run-in of all three contenders, but there could be more twists and turns to come.

Liverpool must ensure they do themselves justice and, at the very least, keep City and Arsenal honest.

Falling short of the title would not represent failure, but stumbling over the finish line would hardly be a fitting way to end Klopp’s tenure.

Fulham vs Liverpool betting tips

Liverpool cannot afford to drop any points when they travel to London to face Fulham on Sunday.

Liverpool to win and both teams to score – 6/4 (Sky Bet)

It is often said that facing teams with nothing to pay for at this stage of the season is preferable to doing battle with sides striving for a particular objective. Fulham, comfortably clear of the drop zone but unlikely to qualify for Europe, fit into the first category.

However, it is not always true that such teams are kind opponents. Fulham are free from pressure and have nothing to lose on Sunday. That makes them potentially dangerous.

They are also pretty strong in front of their own fans, ranking seventh in the Premier League’s home table. Only the current top six and Chelsea have scored more goals at their respective headquarters than Marco Silva’s men.

We expect Fulham to breach a Liverpool backline that has gone five league games without a clean sheet, but the hosts will still find it tough to avoid defeat.

If Liverpool continue to create an abundance of chances, they will surely start finishing them off sooner rather than later. Klopp’s side can get back on track in the capital.

Over 3.5 goals - Evens (Sky Bet)

Neutrals have certainly enjoyed watching Liverpool games of late, even if their own supporters would have preferred more routine and uneventful encounters.

Their matches throughout the Premier League season are averaging 3.22 goals per game, so it would not be out of keeping for this one to contain over 3.5.

Fulham have shown that they can cause problems to the biggest sides in the division.

They scored three goals in a brilliant victory over Tottenham Hotspur last month. The Cottagers have also beaten Arsenal at home, while they scored three times in the reverse fixture at Anfield and were a tad unfortunate to lose on that occasion.

The evidence suggests this is unlikely to be a dull, low-scoring affair.

Trent Alexander-Arnold over 0.5 assists - 2/1 (Sky Bet)

Trent Alexander–Arnold made his comeback from injury in the defeat by Crystal Palace, appearing as a second-half substitute.

With Conor Bradley ruled out for three weeks with an ankle problem, Alexander-Arnold returned to the starting XI against Atalanta.

He will be in the side again when Liverpool head to Craven Cottage for this crunch clash on Sunday.

Alexander-Arnold is a right-back on paper, but that term does not adequately describe his contributions.

The England international has always been a marvellous crosser of the ball and he now combines that with another form of creativity, moving into midfield and playing incisive passes into his attacking team-mates.

Only Pascal Gross, Bruno Fernandes and Martin Odegaard are averaging more key passes per game than Alexander-Arnold in 2023/24, evidencing the Liverpool man’s invention.

On his first Premier League start in more than two months, Alexander-Arnold can make an impression by doing what he does best.
