Real Madrid vs Barcelona predictions

Time and time again, by hook or by crook, Real Madrid find a way to win in the Champions League.

They were second best for most of Wednesday’s quarter-final second leg against Manchester City, but their grit and determination (together with some profligate finishing from the holders) saw them scrape a 1-1 draw after extra time at the Etihad Stadium.

Luka Modric proceeded to miss the first penalty of the shoot-out, but Jude Bellingham, Lucas Vazquez, Nacho and Antonio Rudiger kept their cool to send Madrid into the last four of a competition they have won a record 14 times.

The Blancos will still be on a high when they take to the field for this weekend’s Clasico. Their eternal rivals from Catalonia will not.

Barcelona were knocked out of the Champions League this week, despite holding a 3-2 aggregate advantage over Paris Saint-Germain ahead of the second leg.

The Blaurana soon extended that lead to 4-2 as Rodrygo opened the scoring on the night, but a red card shown to Ronald Araujo after half an hour swung the tie in PSG’s favour.

The French side then scored four goals without reply to book their spot in the semi-final, where they will take on Borussia Dortmund.

Barcelona are therefore facing up to the prospect of a third trophyless season in the last five. To prevent that being the case, Xavi Hernandez’s side must beat Madrid here.

A win at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu would move Barca within five points of their arch-rivals in top spot. Madrid would still be strong favourites to win the title from there, but they would at least have more work to do.

On the other hand, a victory for the home side on Sunday would almost certainly make Madrid uncatchable at the summit of the standings.

Real Madrid vs Barcelona betting tips

Real Madrid can wrap up the La Liga title by beating Barcelona in the Spanish capital this weekend.

Real Madrid to win - 9/10 (Betfred)

Real Madrid were on the back foot for most of the match at the Etihad Stadium, just as Carlo Ancelotti would have expected them to be.

As hosts in the Clasico, the Blancos will be obliged to adopt a more front-footed approach here. Ancelotti will also be encouraging his players to seize this chance to in effect secure the title before the semi-finals of the Champions League kick off.

Xavi railed against the referee who sent Araujo off on Tuesday. It was a debatable decision, but the 4-1 defeat will have left Barcelona feeling low. They may struggle to recover in time for Sunday.

Note, too, Madrid’s sublime record in front of their own fans this season. They have dropped only four La Liga points at their headquarters in 2023/24 and have not lost a home game in any competition.

Barcelona are unbeaten in the league in almost three months, but this is the toughest test they have faced over that period.

Real Madrid to win the second half - 11/10 (bet365)

Real Madrid put everything they had into Wednesday’s game against Manchester City, and several players looked dead on their feet after 120 intense minutes.

Tiredness could be a factor this weekend, then. It is true that Barcelona had to play for an hour with 10 men, but their European game was at home and it took place 24 hours before Madrid’s.

It could take a while for Ancelotti’s team to get going. The Italian would ordinarily ring the changes after his side’s Champions League exertions, but the identity of Madrid’s opponents means he must name his strongest possible XI.

Even without the fatigue factor, the Blancos tend to come on strong after the interval. They rank third in La Liga’s first-half home table but first in the second-half standings.

Whereas Madrid have been ahead after 45 minutes in only nine of their 15 matches at the Bernabeu, they have won 13 second halves on familiar territory.

Rodrygo to score any time - 9/4 (Sky Bet)

Although Joselu has often started up front before or after a big Champions League game this season, he may have to do with a place on the bench this weekend.

Ancelotti will likely stick with a front two of Vinicius Junior and Rodrygo, with support provided by the likes of Fede Valverde and Jude Bellingham.

Rodrygo opened the scoring for Madrid on Wednesday, having also scored against Manchester City in the first leg.

The Brazilian, who scored against Barcelona in the Supercopa earlier in the season, is developing a well-earned reputation as a player who turns up in the big games.

Only Bellingham and Vinicius have put the ball in the back of the net more often this term than Rodrygo, who looks like a good pick for bettors in the anytime goalscorer market.
