Paris Saint-Germain vs Lyon predictions

Paris Saint-Germain delivered the perfect response to their doubters on Wednesday night. 

Trailing 3-2 from the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final against Barcelona, Luis Enrique’s side ran out 4-1 winners in Catalonia to advance to the last four of Europe’s premier competition.

It was a huge victory for PSG. After prior ignominious exits from the Champions League, PSG’s mentality was justifiably called into question. On this occasion, they rose to the task.

Granted, a major refereeing decision did go in their own favour. Barcelona felt hard done by when Ronald Araujo was shown a red card after half an hour, by which point Barca had extended their aggregate advantage to 4-2.

Xavi Hernandez railed against the official, labelling him a “disaster” after the match, but PSG deserve credit for keeping their cool and scoring four goals against the 10 men.

PSG are now just one two-legged victory away from their second Champions League final. Borussia Dortmund should not be written off in the semis, but it is certainly not the worst draw for PSG.

Not for the first time over the last decade, PSG’s season will be defined by how they perform on the European stage. The Ligue 1 title is seen as par for the course these days given their financial and structural advantage over their fellow French clubs.

Still, for all their domestic dominance in recent times, PSG are yet to match Lyon’s achievement of winning seven championships in a row, a feat they accomplished between 2002 and 2008.

Ten points clear in top spot heading into the weekend, PSG need a maximum of two more wins to wrap up the title this year. 

Finishing first is better than finishing second, of course, but Luis Enrique knows that the Champions League is what will make or break his team’s season.

PSG vs Lyon betting tips

Paris Saint-Germain can take another step closer to the Ligue 1 title by beating Lyon at the Parc des Princes.

This has been a season of two halves for Lyon. Only one of their first 14 Ligue 1 matches ended in victory, leaving one of France’s biggest clubs rock-bottom of the standings.

Neither Laurent Blanc nor Fabio Grosso, their first two managers of the campaign, could arrest Lyon’s slide. Many wondered whether relegation was a genuine possibility.

They have since shot up the table under the guidance of interim boss Pierre Sage, so much so that Lyon are now in the mix for European qualification.

While Paris Saint-Germain were flying out to Barcelona for that midweek Champions League assignment, Lyon were at home with their feet up.

The hosts could therefore be a bit slower out of the blocks than usual, giving Sage’s side the chance to dig in for the first 45 minutes or so. 

By the end of the game, though, PSG will probably have found a way through. Lyon should not be underestimated, but the hosts should prove too strong in this one.

To the surprise of no one, Paris Saint-Germain are the top scorers in Ligue 1 this season. Their 28 games have yielded 65 goals, 12 more than next-best Monaco.

Even if Luis Enrique shuffles his pack as he is wont to do, the home team should possess more than enough firepower to make the net bulge at least twice.

A clean sheet could elude them, though. PSG have not shut out any of the last eight visitors to the Parc des Princes in Ligue 1, with defensive lapses something Luis Enrique is keen for them to cut out.

Lyon, for their part, have scored in all but one of their 15 top-flight fixtures since the middle of December. Since Sage took charge on November 30, only PSG and second-placed Brest have scored more goals than Lyon.

All of which is promising news for the neutrals, who will be hoping for an entertaining affair in Paris on Sunday night.

Goncalo Ramos to score any time - 6/4 (BetUK)

Kylian Mbappe is the favourite in the anytime scorer market, but it is not guaranteed that he will be in the starting XI.

Luis Enrique has regularly left him out of the team for Ligue 1 matches in 2024, telling reporters that he has to begin preparing for life after the soon-to-be Real Madrid star.

With that in mind, Goncalo Ramos is the best choice here. Only Mbappe has scored more goals in Ligue 1 for Paris Saint-Germain this term, and the Portugal international is in line to start after not featuring at all against Barcelona on Tuesday.

Ramos is not a first-choice pick in the Champions League but he should get plenty of minutes before the Ligue 1 season is out.

Against Lyon, Ramos can show why he is still a useful option for PSG.
