Midfielder Jon Nolan says League One will be a different challenge to the Championship but believes the Blues will be capable of success during their first season in the third tier for 62 years.

Nolan, 27, helped his former club Shrewsbury Town to the League One play-off final in 2017/18.

“It will be different to the Championship. League One is more direct. There are not many teams who overly pass the ball,” Nolan told the club site.

“In League One you can play more off the cuff. In the Championship, it’s more structured. More teams have a set style of play. There is a difference in the quality and sharpness of the players as well.

“It’s obviously not a given but if we keep most of our team together and play like we showed we can do at stages during the season, that will be more than enough to win matches in League One.”

Meanwhile, former Blues and Shrews boss Paul Hurst, the man who brought Nolan to Portman Road last summer, is strongly tipped to become the new manager of Scunthorpe United, who were recently relegated to League Two.

ArnieM added 18:13 - May 10 Judging by Nolan's observations of League one, I think ole flat cap McCarthys style of 9 behind the ball followed by the obligatory hoof , would have been right at home as far as football style is concerned in League One!

You couldn't do it with Shrewsbury so what makes you feel you have what it takes to achieve it with Ipswich? It was signing players of your standard that resulted in relegation so resulting in the losing mentality taking hold which is not going to be easily lost. With luck Lambert will have the nerve to get shot of you and your mates to allow a better atmosphere to return!

I think, however, that the r3cent rigours and disappointments have - understandably - had a huge negative impact on individual and collective confidence and self belief. Best for players to keep public comments, opinions and crystal ball gazing to a minimum. Hostages to fortune etc. (Just watching Tranmere vs F Green Rovers in Div 2 play off match. Norwood of Tranmere looks exactly like the striker we need!)

An awful manager, hurt signed a load of no hopers to our club and he should have been sacked before a ball had been kicked last season. Evans, you should have realised mate. Unfortunately now we have to put up with this babbling rubbish all summer mates. The proof will be in the pudding. Who will we sign, who is going. Realistically we need to sign at least 3 top goal scorers to have a good chance of bouncing straight back. That's going to cost 9 million. Will Evans pay for that? No. And I don't blame him

LegendofthePhoenix added 08:01 - May 11 Jon Nolan became one of our best players in the 2nd half of the season. It's no surprise that it took 1/2 a season for him and Toto to adjust to the Champuoship. He was showing great vision, made several lovely passes, and I thought more than once that he was looking like Jim Magilton but with pace. I'm sure Jon will be huge for us next season. His comments show just the right balance of confidence and restraint.

midastouch added 13:00 - May 11 Nolan definitely improved over the season as he looked well off the pace first half of the season. His miss against Reading was costly given the context of the game but feel a lot happier about his prospects as a Town player now than I did for large periods of last season.

Dissboyitfc added 18:29 - May 11 Cheshire Blue take off i love the MM spectacles, its a well known fact Bart and his heroics kept us up whilst he was in charge! The bart that came back from the world cup was a lookalike in comparison to the former Bart that saved us 2 seasons running! I can imagine that most of the MM lovers never went to portman rd, because if they did they wouldn't spout just complete and utter rubbish! Again i wish i could mark you down twice! Think Nolan may shine in league 1

Dissboyitfc added 18:35 - May 11 And No one wished for relegation, then again i suppose the MM lovers could well have wished for it, so they could say, " be careful what you wished for" Nothing short of pathetic! WE wished For MM to go and got that wish granted. If us being relegated is a by product of him going then so be it! Every team that MM takes charge of go down when he leaves, its because he leaves behind an anti-football mess!
