This has been a fantastic week for both Borussia Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen.

On Tuesday, Dortmund overturned a 2-1 first-leg deficit to win their Champions League quarter-final against Atletico Madrid.

A 4-2 victory in the return game at Signal Iduna Park sent BVB through to the last four for the first time since 2013, when they went on to reach the final under Jurgen Klopp.

Atletico came from 2-0 down to level things up at 2-2 on the night. As things stood, the Spanish side were going through.

But Dortmund did not let their heads drop. The hosts dug deep and scored twice more to keep their European dreams alive. Paris Saint-Germain await in the next round.

Bayer Leverkusen also progressed to the semi-finals of a continental competition in midweek. A 1-1 draw with West Ham United on Thursday saw them advance in the Europa League with a 3-1 win on aggregate.

A few days prior, Xabi Alonso’s side secured the Bundesliga title with a 5-0 thumping of Werder Bremen at the BayArena. 

Supporters poured onto the pitch after the final whistle to serenade their heroes, who remain unbeaten in all competitions this term.

In further good news for Dortmund (but bad news for the Premier League), results in Europe this week mean Germany is now the strong favourite to be granted an additional place in next season’s Champions League.

That would see the top five qualify, taking some of the pressure off fourth-placed RB Leipzig and Dortmund in fifth. Those two teams are level on points and 14 clear of Eintracht Frankfurt in sixth.

Europe is now the priority for both clubs, but that may actually produce an entertaining encounter on Sunday, provided fatigue is not too much of a factor following the pair’s midweek exertions.

This is a tough game to predict as Borussia Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen seek a win at Signal Iduna Park.

There is no doubt that Bayern Munich have underwhelmed in the Bundesliga this term, but that is not why Bayer Leverkusen have won the title.

Alonso’s side have set a ferocious pace at the summit of the standings. They could yet finish on 94 points, three more than the record set by Bayern in 2012/13.

That target means Leverkusen still have something to play for in the league, as does the fact that they could become the first team in Bundesliga history to go an entire campaign unbeaten.

From a betting perspective, though, it could be worth backing their undefeated streak to finally come to an end this weekend. That is not to say a Borussia Dortmund victory is the most likely outcome on Sunday, but it represents the best value in the win market.

Leverkusen were in action in London on Thursday, two days after Dortmund played on home turf.

They needed another late equaliser to avoid defeat by West Ham, something we have seen in a few of their recent matches. 

With the home fans behind them, Dortmund could inflict upon Leverkusen their first defeat of 2023/24.

Borussia Dortmund are not yet guaranteed Champions League football next season and Bayer Leverkusen still have a points tally to chase and an unbeaten record to defend. Even so, the pressure has been taken off both teams to an extent.

That is good news for the neutrals. This was unlikely to be a cagey affair anyway, but it is now even more probable that we will be treated to an enjoyable 90 minutes.

Dortmund may be 23 points behind their upcoming opponents, but they will not approach this game as massive underdogs. 

Edin Terzic will instruct his side to get at Leverkusen, especially as the visitors may have a degree of tiredness in their legs and minds.

Leverkusen have shown all season long that they are a front-footed team, so we can expect them to fight fire with fire on Sunday.

Jeremie Frimpong to score any time - 4/1 (bet365)

Jeremie Frimpong scored Bayer Leverkusen’s equaliser at the London Stadium on Thursday, but that is not the only reason why we are tipping him to find the net here.

Odds of 4/1 are excellent on a player who has notched 12 goals in all competitions this season. That makes him Leverkusen’s third-highest scorer behind Victor Boniface and Florian Wirtz.

Frimpong is perfectly suited to the wing-back role in which he is used by Alonso. The Netherlands international will have plenty of opportunities to surge down the flank at Signal Iduna Park.

There has been talk that Frimpong - unlike most of his team-mates - may leave the BayArena this summer, although Leverkusen will do all they can to keep hold of him.

Before that, do not be surprised if the wing-back pops up with another goal this weekend.
