England Under-17 international forward Mason Cotcher was the trialist who scored for Ipswich Town's Under-21s at Portman Road yesterday, the EADT and Ipswich Star understands.

Having starred for Sunderland's Under-18s last season, Cotcher was an unused substitute in the Black Cat's FA Cup third round win at Shrewsbury in January 2023.

He was offered a professional contract at the Stadium of Light leading up to his 17th birthday last September but instead opted to explore other options.

During a trial period at Arsenal last November he was promoted to train with the first team squad by impressed manager Mikel Arteta.

Sunderland will be due a compensation fee for the player, which would be set at tribunal if two clubs can't agree a financial package.
